Pressure Conversion
Convert psi to bar
1 psi = 0.068948 bar
Bar is the standard pressure unit across most of Europe and on many hydraulic and pneumatic component datasheets, while psi remains standard in US practice - this conversion comes up constantly when reading imported equipment specs.
1 bar is defined as exactly 100,000 Pa. Since 1 psi = 6,894.76 Pa (see the psi-to-kPa conversion), 1 psi = 6,894.76 / 100,000 = 0.0689476 bar.
A hydraulic system rated to 3,000 psi is rated to roughly 207 bar - a spec commonly seen on European-made cylinders and pumps.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is 1 bar so close to 1 atmosphere?
It's a deliberate design choice, not a coincidence - bar was defined at 100,000 Pa specifically because that's close to Earth's average sea-level atmospheric pressure (101,325 Pa), making it a convenient, round, everyday-scale unit for meteorology and general engineering use.
What does bar(g) or barg mean on a spec sheet?
The (g) or lowercase g suffix marks the value as gauge pressure - relative to atmospheric - the same distinction psig makes for psi. A pressure listed as barg needs atmospheric pressure added to get an absolute value, exactly as with psig versus psia.
