Belt Length Calculator
Calculate two-pulley belt length or center distance for open and crossed belt drives, with wrap angles, straight span, and allowance-adjusted order length.
A belt length calculation turns pulley pitch diameters and shaft center distance into the belt pitch length you need to select from a catalog. This calculator supports open belts, crossed belts, and the reverse problem of estimating center distance from a known belt length. It reports exact geometric length, the common hand approximation, wrap angles, straight-span length, and an allowance-adjusted order length so the result is useful for real belt-drive layout work.
D · Use the catalog pitch diameter when available.
d · Must be less than or equal to the large pulley diameter.
C · Shaft center-to-center distance, not pulley edge spacing.
a · Optional percent added for take-up or ordering margin.
Solution
Enter pulley pitch diameters and center distance or belt length to calculate the missing value.
L = 2sqrt(C² - e²) + d(π - 2β)/2 + D(π + 2β)/2

Belt Length Quick Checks
| Check | Typical guidance | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Pitch diameter | Use catalog pitch diameters | Matches belt pitch length better than outside diameter |
| Open belt center distance | Often 1-3 × (D + d) | Avoids very tight wrap or long-span whip |
| Small-pulley wrap | Higher wrap improves grip | Low wrap can reduce power capacity |
| Final belt | Choose nearest standard catalog length | Real belts come in standard pitch lengths |
Variables & Units
| Symbol | Variable | Description | Common Units |
|---|---|---|---|
| L | Belt Length | Required belt pitch length measured along the belt running line. | mm, in, ft |
| D | Large Pulley Pitch Diameter | Pitch diameter of the larger pulley or sheave. | mm, in |
| d | Small Pulley Pitch Diameter | Pitch diameter of the smaller pulley or sheave. | mm, in |
| C | Center Distance | Distance between the two pulley shaft centers. | mm, in |
| β | Tangent Angle | Angle correction caused by different pulley diameters. | |
| e | Radius Offset | (D - d)/2 for open belts and (D + d)/2 for crossed belts. | mm, in |
How to Use This Calculator
- 01Choose whether to solve belt length from center distance or center distance from a known belt length.
- 02Select open belt for a normal non-crossed drive, or crossed belt only when the belt intentionally crosses and reverses rotation.
- 03Enter the large and small pulley pitch diameters. For V-belts and timing belts, pitch diameter is better than outside diameter.
- 04Enter center distance or known belt length, then add an optional allowance if you want a take-up or installation margin.
- 05Review the wrap angles and center-distance status before selecting a standard belt size from a manufacturer catalog.
How the Formula Works
An open belt has two straight tangent spans plus two wrap arcs. The exact formula uses the tangent angle beta = asin((D - d)/(2C)) and then sums straight span, small-pulley wrap, and large-pulley wrap.
The familiar shortcut L = 2C + pi(D + d)/2 + (D - d)^2/(4C) is a close approximation for ordinary open-belt drives. This calculator shows both exact and approximate values so hand checks are easy.
A crossed belt wraps both pulleys more than 180 degrees and uses the pulley-diameter sum in the tangent-angle term. It can improve wrap, but it also twists the belt and is not appropriate for all belt types.
Worked Example 01
Open belt length from pulley diameters and center distance
Known
- Large pulley diameter: 250 mm
- Small pulley diameter: 100 mm
- Center distance: 500 mm
Formula
L = 2sqrt(C² - e²) + d(π - 2β)/2 + D(π + 2β)/2
Substitution
e = 75 mm, β = asin(75 / 500), L = 2sqrt(500² - 75²) + 100(π - 2β)/2 + 250(π + 2β)/2
Result
L ≈ 1561.05 mm
The small pulley wrap is about 162.75°, which is usable for many preliminary layouts but still needs a belt manufacturer's power-rating check.
Worked Example 02
Find center distance from a known belt
Known
- Known belt length: 1561.05 mm
- Large pulley diameter: 250 mm
- Small pulley diameter: 100 mm
Formula
C solved numerically from exact belt geometry
Substitution
Solve exact open-belt geometry for C
Result
C ≈ 500 mm
This reverse solve is useful when a standard catalog belt length is fixed and you need the shaft spacing that fits it.
Applications
- 01Estimating replacement belt pitch length for a two-pulley drive
- 02Designing pulley center distance for a known standard belt length
- 03Checking small-pulley wrap angle before final belt-drive selection
- 04Comparing exact geometry with the common open-belt hand approximation
Assumptions
- 01Two parallel shafts and two circular pulleys.
- 02Pulley dimensions are pitch diameters, not necessarily outside diameters.
- 03The result is belt pitch length before selecting the nearest standard catalog belt.
- 04The belt has no stretch, slip, installation tension change, or manufacturing tolerance in the geometry model.
Where This Model Stops
- 01Does not size belt section, width, tooth pitch, number of belts, or power rating.
- 02Does not calculate belt tension, slip, creep, shaft load, take-up travel, misalignment, or pulley groove fit.
- 03A crossed belt twists the belt and may not be allowed for timing belts or many V-belt layouts.
- 04Final belt selection must use the manufacturer's standard pitch-length catalog and adjustment range.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from the Belt Speed Calculator?
The Belt Speed Calculator finds the linear belt velocity from one pulley diameter and RPM. This Belt Length Calculator finds the physical belt loop length or pulley center distance from two pulley diameters.
Should I use pitch diameter or outside diameter?
Use pitch diameter when available, especially for V-belts and timing belts. Outside diameter can be close for some rough checks, but catalog belt lengths are normally pitch lengths.
Does this choose the exact standard belt to buy?
No. It gives the required pitch length and an optional allowance-adjusted length. Round to the nearest suitable standard belt from the manufacturer's catalog and confirm the take-up adjustment range.
When should I use crossed belt layout?
Use crossed belts only when reversed rotation is intentional and the belt type allows twisting. Most modern timing and V-belt drives use open layouts unless the manufacturer specifically supports a crossed arrangement.
